MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Memphis police are still looking for the person accused of posing as an Uber driver and robbing two people at gunpoint in the 3400 block of Lamar.

Police said the two were leaving a strip club down the street when they came across a man with dreadlocks they thought was an Uber driver.

People in this area said it will make them think twice about who they can trust.

“That’s messed up. That’s kind of sad when you can’t rely on someone to do what they’re supposed to do and they’re not the person they say they are,” said Anthony Williams.

Williams was on edge like a lot of people WREG spoke with after learning two people were robbed at gunpoint by someone police said pretended to be an Uber driver.

“I think that’s messed up. I don’t know what to say. It’s ridiculous, it really is,” Williams said.

The victims were caught off guard when using what they thought was a ride share service.

Police said they got into a black Mercedes and then the man drove off.

Minutes later he robbed them at gunpoint leaving them on Lamar.

“It’s crazy someone got robbed like that. It’s crazy,” said Zooted Stacks.

Stacks said he knows people who rely on Uber.

In order to use Uber, you have to call an Uber using an app on your phone.

It is not clear if the victims called someone or not.

Stacks said he plans to have conversations with his friends about incidents like this.

“That’s real scary, you got to watch out, you really can’t trust nobody nowadays,” he explained.

We reached out to Uber’s corporate office.

Memphis Police are warning people to make sure they check references before getting into the car with anyone who says they are an Uber driver.

They also suggested you rely on drivers you are familiar with and check their ratings.
