The Scottsdale Police Department has arrested an Uber driver on suspicion of sexually assaulting a 16-year-old in June, police said.

Police confirmed the following information, citing court documents not readily available to The Arizona Republic.

James R. Stough, 53, picked up the 16-year-old girl from her school in Phoenix after she had finished her final exams, according to police. While conversing, the girl revealed to Stough that she was an athlete and had recently injured her ankle.

Before dropping the victim off at her home in north Scottsdale, Stough claimed to be a nurse and pulled over in an undeveloped area of homes near Pinnacle Peak and Pima roads, court documents show.

Stough opened the back door and told the girl he was going to look at her ankle before inappropriately touching her, police said.

Stough released the girl about a half a mile from her home before returning to her home after the girl’s father called for an Uber, hoping the driver would return. Scottsdale police arrived on scene at the same time as Stough, who denied the allegations to the officers.

Uber records confirmed the vehicle stopped in the area the victim said, according to court documents.

DNA found on the victim’s shorts was matched with Stough’s on Dec. 22, police said, and Stough was arrested.

Stough has been booked into jail on charges of kidnapping, assault and sexual conduct with a minor.
